In olden days , ‘Gateway of India’ would have been the primary structure that every noticed by visitors coming in by ferry in Mumbai city. The Gateway of India has also been known as the Taj Mahal of Mumbai , and is the city’s one of the top tourist attraction.

The Gateway of India was assembled to commemorate the visit of Queen Mary and King George V to Mumbai, prior to the Delhi Durbar, in December 1911. However, since the building didn’t commence till 1915 they only got to see only a cardboard model of the structure. The foundation stone was laid on 31 March 1911, by the governor of Bombay Sir George Sydenham Clarke, with the last layout of George Wittet March 1913 sanctioned on 31. The gateway was assembled from concrete and basalt. The foundations were completed in 1920, and building was concluded in 1924.The main objective behind the construction of the Gateway of India was to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Bombay (Mumbai). In March 1911, Sir George Sydenham Clarke, who was then the Governor of Bombay, laid down the monument's first foundation. Although, this plan was approved only in 1914, the reclamations at Apollo Bunder were completed only in 1919. The architectural design of Gateway of India was fashioned by architect, George Wittet. It took 4 years to complete this monument's construction.
The central dome is (25 meters) above the earth at feet 48 feet (15 meters) in diameter and 83 its highest point. The entire harbour front was realigned in order to come in-line with a planned esplanade which would sweep down to the center of the town. On each side of the arch, there are large halls that can hold 600 individuals. The price of the building was 21 lakh (US$38,000), borne chiefly from the Government of India. For lack of funds, the approach road was never constructed, and thus the gateway stands at an angle for the road before it.

The architect George Wittet joined the elements of the Roman triumphal arch and the 16th century architecture of Gujarat. Its layout is a blend of Hindu and Muslim architectural styles; the arch is of Muslim style as the ornaments are of Hindu style. The gateway is reinforced concrete and assembled from basalt. The stone was locally obtained, and the perforated screens were brought from Gwalior. The gateway faces out to Mumbai Harbour from the point of Apollo Bunder.

It’s the location where the governors and viceroys used to land upon their arrival in India.

Observed here is the bunch, which includes local and international tourists, local photographers with the monument in the backdrop. The statue was unveiled on 26 January 1961 on the function of India’s Republic Day. Another statue in the region is that of Swami Vivekananda.
